Short answer: No. United Services is an independent life insurance brokerage, not a multi-level-marketing company, and not a pyramid scheme. But you shouldn't take a one-word answer on faith — you should want the structural reasons, because that's the only way to actually tell the difference. So here's the honest, detailed version, written by me, the founder. Ask me anything; I'll answer it the same way.
I built United Services specifically as an alternative to the MLM-style insurance organizations, so this is a fair question and one I welcome. If you're an agent evaluating us — or just researching before a conversation — this is exactly the scrutiny you should apply to any agency, including mine.
First, what actually makes something an "MLM"?
Insurance distribution is naturally tiered — carriers pay through IMOs, FMOs, and agencies, and contract levels stack. Having levels or an upline does not, by itself, make an organization an MLM. That's an important distinction, because a lot of legitimate, honest agencies have hierarchies.
The line between a normal distribution hierarchy and an MLM comes down to one thing: what the structure is optimized for. In an MLM-style model, your advancement and your real income depend on recruiting and building a downline — the economically meaningful rewards (overrides, sometimes even renewals and true book ownership) are gated behind reaching a rank, and that rank is reached through team production. The structure needs a constant flow of new recruits at the bottom to feed the people at the top.
The simplest test anyone can apply: Can you reach the top of the compensation plan on your own personal production alone, without recruiting a single person? If yes, it's a production model. If no — if the real money requires building a team — it's a recruiting model, whatever it calls itself.
How United Services is structured (and why it isn't an MLM)
Here is exactly how we work, point by point — these are the structural facts that answer the question.
1. You advance on your own production — never on recruiting
At United Services, you move up the contract levels based on your personal production. You can reach the top of our pay scale without ever recruiting one person. Recruiting is completely optional and has zero effect on your personal commission level. That single fact is the clearest structural reason we are not an MLM: in an MLM, advancement requires building a team. Here, it never does.
2. Overrides are only the spread — and they hit zero at parity
If you choose to build a team (optional), the only thing you earn on an agent you develop is the spread between your contract level and theirs. As that agent produces and advances toward your level, the spread shrinks — and when they reach your level, it becomes zero. There is no permanent cut, and there are no stacked "generational" overrides flowing up through many levels of upline. Compare that to the MLM model, where the top of the hierarchy takes a large, permanent override on the production of everyone below them, many generations deep. That generational-override structure is the mathematical signature of a pyramid. We don't have it.
3. You own your book of business — and you're vested from day one
Your clients are your clients, and your renewal commissions are yours. You are vested from day one — there is no vesting schedule, no waiting period, and no rank you have to reach first to "unlock" ownership. If you ever leave United Services, your book of business and your renewals go with you. This is written into our attorney-reviewed agent agreement, not just marketing. In many MLM-style shops, "own your book" and "vested" are advertised but gated behind reaching a senior rank through team-building — the opposite of day-one ownership.
4. No forced recruiting, no lead-buying requirement, no junk fees
We don't require you to recruit, we don't require you to buy leads (and we don't sell leads to our own agents as a profit center), and we don't charge monthly fees, technology fees, or training fees. The only cost is standard E&O coverage, which every agent carries independently. A model that makes its money by selling things to its agents — leads, tools, training — rather than by helping them succeed is a pattern worth watching for. We don't operate that way.
5. You represent multiple carriers (we're independent, not captive)
United Services is a non-captive, independent brokerage. You can place each client with the carrier that actually fits their needs, rather than being tied to a single company's products. Independence and honest production-based comp are the whole point.
"But you're a newer agency — how do I know?"
Fair, and I'll be straight with you: United Services is a founder-led, independent brokerage, and we're building our track record in the open. I'd rather tell you that honestly than pretend to be something older or bigger than we are. Here's how you can verify everything above rather than taking my word for it:
- Ask for the actual agent agreement. I'll send it to you. It's attorney-reviewed, and it states in writing that you own your book and are vested from day one. Read it — or have your own attorney read it. The document backs up every claim on this page.
- Ask me the hard questions directly. Release policy, carrier appointments (issued in your name/NPN), commission structure, what happens to your book if you leave — I'll answer all of it plainly, on a call, before you ever sign anything.
- Apply the test to us. Ask whether you can reach the top of our pay scale on personal production alone. The answer is yes. Ask whether recruiting affects your commission level. The answer is no.
- Talk to our agents. We're small enough that you can actually speak with the people writing business here.
An honest opportunity survives scrutiny — in fact, it invites it. That's the entire reason I wrote a public page titled "Is United Services an MLM?" and answered it in detail. I'd rather you scrutinize us closely and join with clear eyes than sign up on hype.
The honest bottom line
United Services is an independent life insurance brokerage where you advance on your own production, own your book, are vested from day one, and never have to recruit anyone to reach the top. Overrides are only the spread between contract levels and drop to zero at parity — there are no permanent generational overrides skimming the base to enrich the top. That structure is, by definition, not an MLM and not a pyramid scheme.
If you're an agent who's tired of the recruiting treadmill and looking for an honest, independent home for your book, that's exactly what we built. And if you have a question this page didn't answer, ask me — I'll give you the same straight answer you got here.
